Food and Beverage Water Disinfection

Food and Beverage Water Disinfection

Growing incidences of foodborne diseases, increasing awareness about food safety among consumers, and increasing demand for non-thermal disinfection process are the factors contributing to a move towards greater use of ultraviolet (UV) technology in the food and beverage sector.

We understand that contamination in any food and beverage production process could result in wastage, product recalls, customer dissatisfaction or illness and the possibility of regulatory fines.

UV technology is a fast and efficient method to inactivate bacteria, viruses, protozoa, spores, yeast, moulds and algae see the full list here.

Daro UV Systems has been designing, manufacturing and successfully delivering certified UV systems for food and beverage manufacturing in the UK for over 40 years.

We source as many of the materials and components from the UK as possible; this keeps our supply chain as short and as manageable as possible to provide you with a reliable service.

If you’re looking for an environmentally friendly, effective, economical and fast solution that is easy to manage and maintain please contact us on 01787 370187 or email info@darouv.co.uk our experts are here to help.

Disinfection and Elimination of Microorganisms

Disinfection is necessary to reduce or eliminate microorganisms from food preparation surfaces or food processing equipment. UV technology solutions are the chemical-free and cost-effective alternative to iodine, biguanide, quaternary ammonium compounds, peracetic acid, and sodium hypochlorite that are commonly used as disinfectants in the food and beverage sector.

UV irradiation is used in the purification of water and other beverages. UV water disinfection systems are environmentally friendly, effective, economical, fast, and easy to manage and maintain.

Disinfection treatment is used for surfaces, liquids and to maintain the quality control of product batches and prevention of cross-contamination of allergens and pathogenic microorganisms, via food, beverages or the packaging used to preserve, protect and transport products.

Growing incidences of foodborne diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, chemicals, and radioactive substances is increasing the burden on the healthcare service providers. According to the WHO, 1 in 10 people fall ill after consuming contaminated food, and 420,000 die every year, resulting in a loss of 33 million healthy lives per year. Items containing bacteria, viruses, and other contaminants cause more than 200 diseases, ranging from diarrhoea to cancers1.

Rising demand for minimally processed items and difficulty in maintaining process control is a major restraining factor to industry. In developed countries, there is increased demand for organic food, and shifts in food habits are causing reduced consumption of prepared food1.

Ultraviolet processing uses radiation from the ultraviolet region of the electromagnetic spectrum for disinfection to take place. The germicidal properties of UV irradiation are due to the destruction of the DNA molecules of microorganisms.

It is possible to utilise UV technology combined with other alternative processing technologies, including various powerful oxidizing agents such as ozone and hydrogen peroxide.

UV applications include disinfection of water supplies and food contact surfaces with microbial load reduction in fruit juices gaining more interest. UV processing has the potential to improve the safety and extend the shelf life of some juices while maintaining more of the fresh-like qualities compared to thermal processing.

Daro UV’s disinfection solutions are designed for use in:

  • Brewing
  • Bottled water production
  • Dairy production
  • Fluids used for ingredients
  • Food processing
  • Meat production
  • Soft drink production including fruit juice
  • Yeast preparation

Other applications for the food and beverage sector include:

  • Cooling fluids
  • Packaging cleaning and disinfecting, such as bottle cleaning
  • Source water and waste-water disinfection
  • Water tank storage headspace

Food and Beverage Surface Disinfection

Cleaning in the food industry is a complex task. Considering various soil challenges and adopting a multi—step process to cleaning followed by disinfection is key to ensuring a safe and hygienic manufacturing environment.

However, bacteria and viruses, crucially, can develop resistance to antibiotics and chemicals. As they have not been shown to develop any resistance to ultraviolet UV, adding UV to the cleaning protocol protects your environment.

UV treatment is a fast, chemical-free and cost-effective way to disinfect surfaces from harmful bacteria, viruses, mould spores, algae and yeast; making surfaces safe.

By combining, cleaning, disinfecting and completing the disinfection process using UV gives you peace of mind that your processes will reduce your risk of infection spread and cross-contamination.

If you have concerns regarding:

  • Microbial contamination
  • Disinfection efficiency
  • Transfer of products or ingredients
  • Keeping your plant running efficiently and safely
  • Reducing cost and management of additional chemical products
  • Minimising wastage
  • Extending the life cycle of machinery and assets
  • Confidence in your brand
